The Battle of Harlem, 16 September 1776
Engraving after Chappel, engraved by J C Armytage, published New York, 1860 (c).
This battle took place on Manhattan Island during the American War of Independence (1775-1783) and ended in victory for General George Washington's Continental Army. Although it had little effect on the wider campaign, the battle was Washington's first triumph of the conflict and boosted Patriot confidence.
