Egyptian Campaign Medal 1882-89, awarded to Superintending Nursing Sister Joan Gray, Army Medical Service
Circular, silver campaign medal with, on the obverse, the veiled head of Queen Victoria, with the inscription in Latin, 'Victoria Regina et Imperatrix' (Victoria, Queen and Empress). On the reverse, a sphinx on a plinth with the word 'Egypt' above. Impressed on the rim with recipient's rank and name; suspended on a blue and white striped ribbon, with the clasp, 'The Nile 1884-85'.
During the 1st Sudan War (1884-1885) members of the Army Nursing Service worked in hospital ships on the River Nile as well as hospitals in Cairo. Gray's medal also includes the clasp 'The Nile 1884-85'.
From a medal group including, Royal Red Cross, 1st Class, 1883, South Africa Medal for Zulu and Basuto Wars 1877-79, Ashanti Star 1896, Queen's South Africa Medal 1899-1902, King's South Africa Medal 1901-02 and Khedive's Egyptian Star 1882-91.
