Kalashnikov AKM 7.62 mm assault rifle used by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), 1987 (c)

This Romanian-made AKM was probably part of a weapons consignment given to the PIRA by Muammar al-Gaddafi's Libyan regime in 1986-1987. The shipments were a result of Gaddafi's desire to strike at the British Government for their support and assistance during the US Air Force's bombing attacks on Tripoli and Benghazi in 1986.

On 7 March 2009 terrorists belonging to the Real IRA used Romanian AKM assault rifles to kill two off-duty British soldiers of 38 Engineer Regiment outside Massereene Barracks in Antrim.
