Mauser M1896 7 mm bolt action rifle, 1899 (c)
The Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State purchased around 50,000 Mauser M1896 rifles and carbines to equip their forces. This particular Boer rifle was appropriated by a member of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Second Lieutenant Macleod, during the Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa. Macleod was wounded at the Battle of Colenso on 15 December 1899.
