Pattern 1856 Pioneer's sword for use in India, 1895 (c)
A pioneer sword has a dual purpose; it has a saw for use on construction projects, but is also a weapon for personal defence. Much of the Indian Army's work was undertaken in rough terrain and there was a steady demand for battalions of pioneers to aid road and bridge construction alongside the work of building fortifications.
