Immediately after the outbreak of war, the Russians invaded East Prussia and Allenstein (now Olsztyn in Poland) was briefly occupied. It was soon recaptured by the Germans after their victory at the Battle of Tannenberg (22-30 August 1914) which took place nearby. The Russians lost 30,000 men killed or wounded. Over 92,000 soldiers were captured by the Germans.
