Identity disc of Captain Allastair McReady-Diarmid, 17th (Service) Battalion, The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment), 1917
This disc was returned to McReady-Diarmid's widow Hilda after he was killed on 1 December 1917 at Moeuvres during the Battle of Cambrai. McReady-Diarmid demonstrated such bravery and leadership there that he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. His repeated bombing sorties repelled several German counter-attacks, and he killed and wounded an estimated 94 enemy soldiers before he fell.
