Prismatic compass, Verner's pattern Mk VII, 1917
During the First World War (1914-1918) officers often carried hand-held compasses in order to sight landmarks, allowing them to judge direction and distances. This example was used by Lieutenant Charles Edward Hawkins of the Worcestershire Regiment.
