After seizing Kandahar, Lieutenant-General Donald Stewart's force then advanced along the Kabul road to Khelat-i-Ghilzai fortress which was captured on 21 January 1879. The Afghan garrison had evacuated prior to Stewart's arrival so the fort was seized without a fight.
