Gold Boer War Tribute Medal issued by the town of Ararat, Western Victoria, Australia, to Private Egbert William Tyers, 1901
This elaborately shaped cross is engraved at the centre with a depiction of a kneeling soldier in colonial-style uniform aiming a rifle. The reverse is engraved 'Presented By the Citizens of Ararat & District to Private E.W. Tyers for services rendered to the Transvaal War 1900-1'. The medal was intended to be worn from a watch chain.
Egbert Tyers embarked with the 2nd Australian Contingent for South Africa in 1899. Although invalided home with enteric fever, he later re-enlisted and returned to serve for the remainder of the war, being one of a small corps of specially-selected Australians raised by Captain Richard Doyle, DSO. This unit, known as Doyle's Scouts, gained a large number of mentions in despatches for its services in the later stages of the war. Tyers served with the Cape Mounted Police after the war, and later settled in South Africa as a farmer, being buried at Kimberley.
