'The steady fore foot snores through the planet's powdered floors', SS Ranchi, 1937

Captain (later Major) Wynne Howes-Roberts, 1st Battalion 13th Frontier Force Rifles, travelling home to England on furlough, 1937-1938.

The caption of this photograph is a quotation from 'The Long Trail', Rudyard Kipling's poem about a sea voyage: 'And the steady fore-foot snores through the planet-powdered floor'.

The SS Ranchi, the Peninsular and Oriental (P&O) Steam Navigation Company ocean liner, on the voyage back to England from Bombay. The SS Ranchi was launched in 1925 and served with the Royal Navy during World War Two (1939-1945) and was eventually scrapped in 1953.
