'Halles d'Ypres', the ruined Cloth Hall at Ypres, 1917 (c)

Photograph by Anthony d'Ypres, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917 (c).

The gradual destruction of Ypres during the War was epitomised by the ruined 13th Century Cloth Hall, which also came to symbolise the effect of war upon western civilisation. Since the war, the Cloth Hall has been meticulously rebuilt to its original form and it now houses the Flanders Fields Museum.

Photograph from an album of 134 photographs compiled by Brigadier Bowcher Campbell Stenhouse Clarke DSO (1882-1986).
