Watercolour by Colonel (later General Sir) The Honourable George Cadogan (1814-1880), 1st (or Grenadier) Regiment of Foot Guards.
Vedette is a French military term, adopted by the British and others, to describe a mounted patrol or outpost responsible for gathering intelligence and providing advanced warnings about enemy movements to the main body of troops.
