'A ravine of Sebastopol after the explosion in the Mamelon Vert', 1855

Watercolour by Colonel George Cadogan (1814-1880), 1855.

A scene from the Crimean War (1854-1856) showing French troops carrying salvaged wood from the Mamelon Vert, a redoubt captured from the Russians during the Siege of Sevastopol. In August 1855 a massive explosion occurred when a powder magazine was shelled by Russian artillery, killing or wounding around 150 French soldiers.

From an album of paintings and sketches of Colonel (later General Sir) The Honourable George Cadogan, 1st (or Grenadier) Regiment of Foot Guards; also known as 'Cadogan's Crimea', 1854-1856.
