Equestrian portrait of General William John Kerr, 5th Marquess of Lothian and Earl of Ancram (1737-1815), in a light cavalry officer's uniform, leading his men, with a sabre hanging from his wrist.
General William John Kerr was the son of General William Henry Kerr, the Earl of Ancram and 4th Marquess of Lothian and Lady Caroline Darcy. His father fought at the Battles of Fontenoy and Culloden in 1745. William John Kerr, like his father, served as Colonel of the 11th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (between 1798 and 1813), and he was later Colonel of 2nd (or Royal North British) Dragoons between 1813 and 1815. He died in January 1815.
