'Dr S of the Rifle Brigade, on the line of March'
Watercolour by Second Lieutenant William Thomas Markham (1830-1886), 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, 1854 (c).
Two battalions of the Rifle Brigade served in the Crimea, taking part in the battles of the Alma and Inkerman and manning the trenches before Sevastopol during the siege. During the campaign eight men of the regiment were awarded Victoria Crosses.
