Minefield near the River Senio, Italy, March 1945
Lantern slide, World War Two, Italy (1943-1945), 1945.
In 1945 the Senio River was a significant obstacle for Allied forces involved in the Spring offensive aimed at capturing Ferrara and Bologna. The picture shows a soldier navigating his way through a minefield, walking between two tapes that mark a cleared route. The river had high artificial banks, bunkers and defensive tunnels as well as minefields.
Produced from a collection of British official war photographs relating to the 78th Division, that were given to the 78th Division Battleaxe Club.
