British troops in open country around Barletta during the 8th Army's advance towards Foggia, September 1943
Photograph, World War Two, Italy (1943-1945), 1943.
The Italian city of Foggia was a major Allied objective because the capture of the large airfield there would give them the ability to strike new targets in Northern Italy, France, Germany and the Balkans.
From a collection of British official war photographs relating to the 78th Division.
