New Zealand infantry entering Cassino, taking cover in ruined houses, Italy, March 1944
Photograph, World War Two, Italy (1943-1945), 1944.
The New Zealanders fought their way into the devastated town on 15 March 1944. The infantry fought from house to house under constant fire from the German defenders. Despite their efforts, Cassino did not fall to the Allies until May.
