Captain Duncan Bairnsfather (far left) was the younger brother of the artist Bruce Bairnsfather. He was appointed to serve as Aide-de-camp (ADC) to Lieutenant General Sir RIchard Cyril Byrne Haking (1862-1945) in March 1917. General Haking commanded XI Corps on the Western Front, during World War One (1914-1918), from September 1915 until the end of the War.
