Mounted British officer 'pig sticking' jackals or wild dogs with a lance, 1840 (c)
Pen and ink sketch by an unidentified artist, 1840 (c).
Pig sticking, the pursuit of wild pig by mounted spearmen, became a popular, exciting and sometimes dangerous sport of British and Indian cavalrymen. Hunting generally was very popular in Indian Army units. It was conducted on some large stations on the same lines as fox hunting in England, though the quarry was more often a jackal.
