The artist, Lieutenant Will Dyson, served in the Australian Imperial Force. After the Federation of 1901 Australian troops were not permitted to deploy outside Australia. But a new Australian Imperial Force, including 15 regiments of Australian Light Horse, was set up to support the war effort. The Australian Imperial Force joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to form the legendary ANZAC Corps that was sent to Gallipoli in 1915.
