Letter from Lieutenant (William Staveley to his mother, 14 December 1812
Sent from somewhere near Fremedas (?) in Spain, the letter describes the retreat following the failed siege of Burgos, commenting adversely on the Spanish Army, and advising of his attempts to obtain a company in a line regiment if there was no immediate vacancy in the Royal Staff Corps.
Staveley served on the staff of the quartermaster-general throughout the Peninsular War, and was present at Talavera, Fuentes de Onoro, Vittoria, the battle of the Pyrenees, and Toulouse, besides the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, and many minor actions
