Photograph, Egypt, 1952.

Short hair and shaving was compulsory in the British Army for reasons of hygiene and discipline. Here the barber's hair clippers are powered from a street lamp in Ismailia. The Paras had been deployed to the Canal Zone in late 1951 as the security of the British installations there deteriorated. Egyptian guerillas established themselves in the towns along the length of the Canal Zone and attacks on vehicles, property, and service personnel increased.
