Village war memorial, All Saints Church, Upper Clatford, Hampshire

The memorial cross in the graveyard of All Saints Church, Upper Clatford in Hampshire. The inscription on the base, partially visible in the photograph reads, 'In Grateful Memory of those from this Parish who gave their Lives for their Country in the Great War 1914-1919'.

The names beneath this inscription include two brothers who died on the Western Front, both aged 23. Lieutenant William Maxey Allen, 13th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died on 26 September 1915 and Lieutenant Stephen Henry Hammans Allen, 3rd/5th Battalion Devonshire Regiment, also attached to 6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died on 27 March 1918.

Another soldier listed is Gunner Arthur George Bowley, 'A' Battery, 218th Brigade. Royal Field Artillery. He died in India on 10 May 1917, aged 25, and was buried in Lucknow at the Cantonment Military Cemetery.
