French Fusil Depareille 1793 .70 inch musket surrendered at Fishguard, 1797 (c)
Launched in support of a planned rebellion in Ireland, the French landing at Fishguard in Wales on 22 February 1797 was the last invasion of mainland Britain. It was supposed to have occurred in tandem with landings in northern England and Ireland, but bad weather cancelled these. After drunkenly looting nearby settlements and engaging in skirmishes with the hastily assembled militia, the 1,400 French troops surrendered two days later.
