A portrait photograph of Prince Alfred Ernest Edward (1844-1900), the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Alfred joined the Royal Navy in 1858 and eventually captained his own vessel, the frigate HMS 'Galatea' before becoming Admiral. Titled as the Duke of Edinburgh from 1866, he later succeeded his paternal uncle as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
