'Fare Thee Well'. Manuscript poem by Gunner John West, 80th Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery, for his wife
West had been married for only three months before being posted overseas. He was taken prisoner alongside 80,000 other Commonwealth soldiers by the Japanese on the fall of Singapore in February 1942. Initially held at Changi prisoner of war camp, he later died when working on the Burma-Siam Railway on 23 October 1943.
