A British camp, South Africa, 1879 (c)
Photograph, 1879 (c).
Bell tents such as those shown in this photograph were used extensively by the British Army during the 19th and 20th centuries. Spacious, easy to erect, and durable in bad weather, they proved to be a highly effective design.
From photograph album containing photographs of scenes in India, South Africa, and the Zulu War (1879).
From the collection of the former Buffs (East Kent) Regimental Museum.
