The 9th (Eastern and Home Counties) Parachute Battalion was raised in 1942 via the conversion of 10th Battalion, The Essex Regiment, to airborne duties. The battalion was initially assigned to the 3rd Parachute Brigade, then part of the 1st Airborne Division, but was later transferred to the 6th Airborne Division. During the war it took part in the Normandy landings, the Ardennes campaign and the Rhine crossings. It was disbanded in 1948.
