Shell fragment, 1916

This piece of World War One (1914-1918) shell hit Sergeant Louis Henry Jones of the Royal Engineers' helmet on 16 August 1916. The British had adopted a steel helmet in September 1915 to protect soldiers against airburst shrapnel and debris. Far fewer soldiers suffered head injuries.
