A Landing Ship Infantry, en route from Newhaven to Gold Beach, June 1944

Photograph by Lieutenant Anthony Upfill-Brown, 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards, World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.

The Landing Ship Infantry (also known as the Landing Craft Infantry) was a large landing vessel capable of sailing independently from Britain to Normandy and unloading soldiers directly on to the shore. This distinguished it from the smaller Landing Craft Assault (LCA). The latter were transported around by larger vessels then lowered into the water off the target beach.

From a collection of 47 photographs taken by Lieutenant Anthony Upfill-Brown, 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards, Guards Armoured Division.
