Chromolithograph reproduction of an original by Alfred Pearse, 1918 (c), published as part of a mounted set, 'The Angels at Mons', by S H and Company Limited, Clerkenwell, London, 1920 (c).

A battle scene from early on in World War One (1914-1918), with an apparition of a mounted St Michael, winged, with flaming hair, bearing a sword and shield, riding at the head of a unit of French infantrymen, charging with fixed bayonets.

The image is mounted onto thin card, with the title and a verse relating to St Michael, printed below, 'Full in their midst, his flaming sword,/ Triumphant Michael brandished,/ And trampled down the foeman's pride.'
