Battery Sports Day, 25 April 1936
Photograph, North West Frontier, India, 1936.
Soldiers of the 5th (Bombay) Mountain Battery engage in a traditional demonstration of wrestling on horseback at Thal in North West Frontier Province. This sport probably originated in Central Asia, but was adopted by the British as a good way of training soldiers who had to use their strength and skill to dismount their opponents while maintaining control of their own horse.
One of 62 copy photographs collected by Major E W Goodman, Commanding Officer of the 5th (Bombay) Mountain Battery, 1933-1939.
