Breech loading 10-pounder gun of the 5th (Bombay) Mountain Battery, 1933

Photograph, North West Frontier, India, 1933.

Hardly an expedition on the North West Frontier went by without at least one mountain battery being attached to provide artillery support. Although light in calibre, the guns of mountain batteries were designed to be disassembled and transported by pack mule in up to eight loads for use in terrain that would otherwise be impossible to traverse with larger and more conventional artillery.

One of 62 copy photographs collected by Major E W Goodman, Commanding Officer of the 5th (Bombay) Mountain Battery, 1933-1939.
