Home made Mau Mau rifle, 1953 (c)
The Mau Mau fought the British administration in Kenya in the 1950s. They often used brutal methods. In response, the British placed Mau Mau suspects in detention camps with poor conditions. There were about 25,000 Mau Mau guerrillas, but they had few modern weapons. Even so, it took over four years and repressive measures to defeat them.
