Powder horn, 1775 (c)

A powder horn was a container used by a soldier to carry gunpowder. They were made from cow and buffalo horns and usually had a plug or stopper at one end and a lid at the other. This example, manufactured by Gibson, Thomson and Crane of Edinburgh, is engraved '3rd Ft' and belonged to a soldier of the 3rd Regiment of Foot, or The Buffs.
