General Sir Charles Van Straubenzee GCB (1812-1892) commanded 1st Bn 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) in the Crimean War in May 1855. He took part in the assaults on the Redan and the Siege of Sevastopol. Van Straubenzee went on to command a brigade in the Second China War (1857-1860), capturing Canton, and was Governor of Malta from 1872 to 1878.
