A British Infantryman in marching order, 1905
Oil on canvas by James Prinsep Beadle (1863-1947).
Although khaki service drill had been introduced in India from 1885 and for all foreign service outside Europe from 1896, it was not until 1902 that khaki was introduced for home service as well, finally relegating the traditional red coat to a ceremonial role.
