Portrait of John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll and 1st Duke of Greenwich (1680-1743) wearing robes and insignia of the Order of the Thistle.
Argyll commanded the British Government's troops during the 1st Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, including at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in November and the capture of Perth the following month. He had previously fought in the final months of the Nine Years War (1688-1697) and in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
