Members of the 21st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry on board ship prior to their departure from Southampton Docks, March 1901
Photograph by Trooper Cecil W Landon, 21st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, Boer War (1899-1902), 1901.
After the setbacks sustained during 'Black Week' in December 1899 the British government realised it would need more men to defeat the Boers. It responded by raising the Imperial Yeomanry on 24 December 1899. Although based on the existing county yeomanry regiments, the new formations also contained a large contingent of volunteers. The men shown here are probably members of the Second Contingent of Imperial Yeomanry which was formed in early 1901.
From a collection of 29 copy photographs taken by Trooper Cecil W Landon, 21st Bn Imperial Yeomanry, with Rimington's Column.
