Brass model of the Butte de Lion monument, Waterloo, 1830 (c)
Manufacturer unknown, 1830 (c).
The original sculpture, created in 1822 by the Dutch artist Jean-François Van Geel, was the first step towards the massive monument, 'The Lion Mound', that now stands on the Waterloo battlefield. The Butte de Lion was completed in 1826, in memory of all who died on the battlefield, supposedly over the spot where the Prince of Orange was wounded.
