Engineer officers waiting for Zero, Thiepval, September 1916

18th (Eastern) Division attacked Thiepval Ridge on the Somme on 26 September. It advanced under a creeping barrage, and fought its way up the heights and through the village. After vicious hand-to-hand fighting the British gained control of most of Thiepval. One of 188 copy photographs taken by Lieutenant Patrick Robert Koekkoek, Special Bde, Royal Engineers, 1915-1917.
