Major B Magrath, 8th East Lancashire Regiment, struggling through a flooded trench, Foncquevilliers, 1917 (c)
Photograph by Lieutenant Patrick Koekkoek, Royal Engineers, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917 (c).
In some sectors of the front the struggle with the weather was harder than that with the enemy. Heavy rain and the destruction of pre-war drainage ditches by shelling often led to widespread flooding.
One of 188 photographs taken by Lieutenant Patrick Robert Koekkoek, Special Brigade, Royal Engineers, 1915-1917.
