Sergeant Samuel Pye's certificate of service, 1908

A veteran of the 1st Essex Royal Garrison Artillery Volunteers, Pye served in the Boer War (1899-1902) with the City of London Imperial Volunteers. Pye attested at the Guildhall on 4 January 1900 and left Southampton with 16 other comrades from the Essex Volunteer Artillery on 27 January aboard the 'Pembroke Castle' troop ship. He fought in South Africa until November 1900. He left the Army in 1908.

From a collection of documents and maps associated with BQMS Samuel James Pye, 1st Essex Royal Garrison Artillery Volunteers, attached to the City Imperial Volunteers, in South Africa, 1900 and with the 59th Divisional Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery during World War One.
