Pattern 1821 Heavy Cavalry Officer's Sword carried by Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Dalrymple White, 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, at the Battle of Balaklava, 1854

Lieutenant-Colonel (later General Sir) Henry Dalrymple White (1820-1886) led the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade, during which his helmet was damaged by a Russian sabre. Although technically a heavy cavalry officer's sword, this is a particularly light sword, it has a blade more akin to the light cavalry pattern. It has the original pipe-back blade and probably dates from the early years of Queen Victoria's reign when White was first commissioned into the Inniskillings.
