'Royal Naval & Military Tournament', advertising poster, 1911
Chromolithograph poster by Dudley Hardy, published by Dobson Molle and Company, 1911.
The poster gives the dates of the tournament at London Olympia, as 18 May until 3 June 1911. A soldier in red coat and tropical helmet stands on a quayside and watches a warship steam by.
The Royal Tournament was the world's first military tattoo, or display. Established in 1880, it ran for 120 years until 1999, and raised money for a number of service charities. It was held annually in London and the public flocked to the tri-service tournament each summer. The show included displays of drilling, gymnastics, horsemanship and marching bands.
Originally held in the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington, in 1906 it moved to Olympia in West London and then to a larger venue at Earl's Court Exhibition Centre from 1950. The final Royal Tournament was held in 1999. The annual event was axed to reduce military costs following the 1998 Strategic Defence Review.
The Army Benevolent Fund tried to revive the tournament in 2010 as the British Military Tournament. There were four of the remodelled tournaments, the last of which was held in 2013.
