Khaki jacket worn by 2nd Lieutenant (later Lieutenant-Colonel) John Lyon-Maris, Royal Sussex Regiment, with Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF) collar badges, Nigeria Regiment shoulder titles and buttons and a single bronze rank badge to each shoulder strap.
Lyon-Maris was the first National Service subaltern to be seconded to the RWAFF but many others followed during the 1950s until Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and Gambia became independent.
