Belted lead rifle ball, for Brunswick rifle, 1837-1850 (c)
The Brunswick rifle was rifled with two grooves and fired a belted lead ball of .64 inch (1.63 cm) diameter (.766 inch (1.95 cm) diameter at the widest point), weighing 555 grains (36 grams). Compared to the ease of loading of the Minie's expanding conical bullet, it took a considerable effort to force the Brunswick's lead ball down the rifling of the barrel.
