White cotton t-shirt printed with a Union Jack, 'The Sun' newspaper logo and the words, 'Back Our Troops', 1991 (c)
On 2 August 1990 Iraq invaded and annexed its neighbour Kuwait after talks on oil production and debt repayment collapsed. In response, a United Nations authorised coalition waged a war to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait. Propaganda played a key role in the subsequent Gulf War (1990-1991) and media organisations like 'The Sun' issued items like this t-shirt to help convince the British public to support both the conflict itself and the soldiers fighting it.
